Nilfisk Morgantown celebrates Team Week with some holiday cheer!

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Time flies! We can’t believe it has been a year since we said goodbye to our Malvern office and said HELLO to Morgantown! To celebrate this joyous occasion, we kicked off our annual team week for the first time at the Morgantown location. For this year’s festivities, we decided to bring back some employee favorites from Team Week’s past while, hopefully, instilling some new traditions here in Morgantown.

We know that our employees are some of the most talented people! So this year, we divided up our office into teams for the greatest competition ever – Nilfisk’s Got Talent. Teams were given a week to utilize the skills of their teammates and put together a 5 minute act to be performed in front of the whole office! The winning team was chosen by our very own in-house judge, Paul Miller, Vice President and General Manager of Nilfisk-Advance America Inc. Employees not only showed off their Nilfisk and industrial vacuum knowledge but broke out in song and dance and cracked a good joke while doing so!

Other events included:

  • Stocking Stuffers: Every morning, employees were surprised with a special treat left by the Nilfisk Santa!
  • Santa’s Baby Picture Guessing Game: Curious as to what fellow comrades looked like during their diaper days – Morgantown employees were challenged to match their fellow team members with the correct baby photos.
  • Chili Cook-Off: Our talented in-house cooks put their homemade chili on the table for the ultimate office taste test!
  • Also, we couldn’t forget our annual employee holiday luncheon and white elephant gift exchange.
While Team Week and the holidays are always filled with fun and laughter, we also wanted to give back. As our annual holiday contribution, Nilfisk Morgantown employees donated 195 lbs. of food and personal hygiene items to the Greater Berks Food Bank, a local food bank who collect, stores, and distributes food to more than 270 charitable agencies in the area!

Some of our favorite moments from Team Week 2011:

Dust produced by polishing linked to (another) blast

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

In Shanghai, 61 workers were injured after aluminum dust produced by polishing cases for iPads ignited. According to a statement by the China Labor Watch, this blast at the Ri Teng Computer Accessory Company owned by Pegatron Corp. was similar to the Foxconn explosion earlier this year. In May, Foxconn (a major parts supplier for Apple products) was in the headlines for a blast in their polishing workshop due to an explosion of aluminum dust in a ventilation vent.

Apple is still working with Pegatron Corp. to understand the cause of this particular explosion. Details on the conditions of the employees have not been released but we hope they do not suffer from any serious injuries!

EPA RRP Deadline Looms; Thousands of Contractors not Certified (Taken from the Contractor Coaching Partnership)

Monday, December 13th, 2010

The below is an excerpt of a blog post from The Contractor Coaching Partnership regarding their to-date experiences with the EPA’s Lead RRP. The final RRP Renovator Certification deadline is December 31st.

“On 12/31/2010 the EPA RRP Certified Renovator deadline ends. All contractors, landlords, property maintenance personnel, sub contractors and those who work for compensation on pre 1978 homes must be certified. Anyone who is not trained must not offer to work or work on pre 1978 homes or they will be subject to fines from the EPA. Current fines are up to $37,500 per day per offense.

On 6/18/2010 the EPA extension on fines and training caused a significant drop off for those seeking training. From 1/13/2010 to 6/30/2010 The Contractor Coaching Partnership facilitated the training for 3000 contractors. Since then we have only trained a little over 700.

Non-compliant contractors not scared of the EPA

Many contractors tell us they are not worried about becoming certified or getting caught because there have been no EPA fines.  In addition most building officials want nothing to do with the enforcement and many still have no clue as to what is going on with the law.

Trained Contractors Snubbing the EPA RRP Law Requirements

In our (The Contractor Coaching Partnership) outreach efforts we are finding that a significant percentage of contractors are not certifying their firms, not buying hepa vacuums, not implementing the practices, not setting up documentation and generally rolling the dice that the EPA will never mount a sustainable enforcement effort. They say homeowners don’t even know about the law and when it is brought up the homeowner says I don’t care and I don’t want to pay more.

What will 2011 bring?

Who knows what 2011 will bring. It is obvious that until the EPA or local building officials mount a significant enforcement effort that results in fines, wide contractor compliance will continue to move slowly. Meanwhile, compliant contractors who have stepped up to the plate, will have to deal with ineffective and non-existent enforcement in most areas.

Will OSHA have an impact on enforcement?

The RRP Lead Law requires that contractors comply with OSHA Lead Laws. Most residential contractors have little or no experience with  the OSHA Lead in Construction Standard. However, contractors who don’t comply with it and get caught, face huge fines. In some states like Massachusetts, contractors are required to submit a respirator and worker protection program to obtain the lead license. The OSHA fines for serious violations are $7,000 and for willful violations $70,000. If OSHA starts enforcing the standard, these fines will likely have an indirect effect leading to RRP compliance.”

We’re Moving! Nilfisk Industrial Vacuums is Relocating to Morgantown, PA!

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

In the next couple weeks, we’ll be packing our boxes and saying goodbye to our Malvern office, our home for nearly 25 years. But we’ll be saying HELLO to Morgantown, PA, a community in Berks county, about 25 miles from Malvern.

Our new headquarters, located at 740 Hemlock Road, Suite 100, will continue to support our three industrial vacuum cleaner brands: Nilfisk, Nilfisk CFM and Nilfisk ALTO. It is a larger facility that will enable us to keep growing as the industry’s preferred supplier of industrial vacuums.

According to Paul Miller, our VP and General Manager, “Our number one priority is to provide our customers with the best value, quality, and service. Relocating to this facility with increased warehouse space will allow us to meet our customer’s delivery expectations. Our customers can still expect the same quality products we have been offering for more than 100 years.”

The new facility in the Morgantown Business Park also consists of office space for our back office team (where this blog comes from!) that supports Nilfisk Industrial Vacuums’ 17 direct sales managers and large network of distributors, located across the United States and Canada. For more information on our big move, visit www.nilfiskindustrialvacuums.com/newaddress or call 1-800-645-3475. More pictures coming soon!!
